It may be famed as ‘the Land of Fire’ but Azerbaijan is fast becoming a hub of the cool and cutting edge. The country’s capital, Baku, is a city on the up with its contemporary architecture, aqua parks and go-getting attitude. Yet venture a few miles from the spas and SUVs to discover timeless rural villages, bubbling mud volcanoes and raw, untouched landscapes. With one foot in Asia and another in Europe, this is a country that rewards the intrepid.

A vibrant clash of ancient and ultra-modern, soaring mountains and dizzying skyscrapers

The weather in Azerbaijan ranges from cold (-20°C in the mountains) to very hot (+40°C in mid-summer). The best times to visit are usually April to June, when the lowlands can be green and covered in wildflowers. Or September to October for cooler, more comfortable weather.

See some of the world’s most cutting-edge architecture at the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre. Then step back in time in the enchanting UNESCO-listed Walled City.
